Pathways to Exponential Potential

Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge is a structured, high-impact youth enrichment experience designed to prevent summer learning loss, strengthen academic foundations, and ignite confidence through hands-on STEAM learning.

Research consistently shows that students can lose up to 20–30% of school-year math gains over the summer months without structured enrichment. In Washington, DC, the need is especially urgent. According to the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and recent PARCC assessment reports, fewer than 35% of DC students meet grade-level proficiency in mathematics, with even wider disparities among underserved communities. Additionally, national data shows early math proficiency strongly predicts high school graduation and long-term economic mobility.

Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge was created to address these gaps — not just academically, but holistically.

Located in DC but serving the broader DMV region, Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge creates bridges — not just across grade levels, but across access gaps — ensuring students return to school stronger, more confident, and academically positioned to thrive.

At Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge, each day is intentionally structured as a full-circle learning experience where scholars rotate through five dynamic STEAM Labs and one STEAM Choice Club designed to strengthen core academic skills while igniting creativity and leadership. Scholars engage in small, strategically grouped cohorts where instruction is differentiated and personalized, supported by a minimum of four dedicated staff members per age/grade band group to ensure high-quality guidance, safety, and meaningful mentorship.

Daily experiences include small-group academic skill-building embedded within hands-on innovation labs, collaborative design challenges, technology exploration, creative arts integration, and real-world problem-solving activities. Students also participate in structured Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) circles that build confidence, communication, and self-advocacy skills, along with intentional outdoor recreation and movement to support whole-child development.

Each week includes enhanced enrichment opportunities such as field trips, swimming sessions, and organized outdoor games, providing experiential learning beyond the classroom walls while reinforcing teamwork, resilience, and joy. Core skills are strategically mapped across the program to strengthen math fluency, literacy comprehension, financial literacy, collaboration, and leadership development — ensuring that every activity aligns with measurable growth outcomes.

What makes Be Squared’s Summer Bridge unlike any other program is its balance of academic precision and creative freedom, its high staff-to-student ratios, its intergenerational engagement opportunities, and its culminating capstone showcase where students proudly present their innovation projects to families and community partners.

Purpose × Preparation = Exponential Progress.

Be Squared’s Summer Bridge doesn’t just fill summer days — it builds bridges to the next level of excellence.

Intergenerational Engagement Component

Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge incorporates intentional family and community engagement because research from the Harvard Family Research Project and the Search Institute shows that strong developmental relationships significantly improve youth outcomes.

Through family STEAM nights, mentorship circles, and shared learning opportunities, Summer Bridge strengthens connections between generations while building leadership and confidence in youth.

Anticipated Intergenerational Outcomes

Structured mentorship engagement

Increased family participation in learning activities

Strengthened youth self-advocacy skills

Improved sense of belonging and community connection

📊 Anticipated Impact Metrics (Year 1 Targets)

Based on research-informed models and similar structured enrichment programs, we anticipate:

  • 70–80% of participants will demonstrate growth on pre/post assessments
  • 75% will report increased confidence in math and problem-solving
  • 65% will show improved academic engagement indicators
  • 85% of families will report satisfaction with program quality
  • 60% of students will complete a STEAM showcase or capstone presentation

These targets are aligned with research indicating that structured summer programming can significantly reduce learning loss and increase student engagement.

📍 Why DMV Families Need Summer Bridge

Across the DMV region, families are navigating persistent academic gaps and limited access to high-quality, culturally responsive enrichment.

Recent DC data underscores the urgency:

  • Fewer than 35% of DC students meet grade-level math proficiency (OSSE PARCC data).
  • Students from under-resourced communities across DC, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and Northern Virginia continue to experience disproportionate learning gaps.
  • Summer learning loss widens achievement disparities — especially when structured enrichment, academic acceleration, and exposure opportunities are not accessible.

These challenges are not confined to one zip code. They impact families who commute across city and state lines daily for work, school, and opportunity.

Be Squared’ s Summer Bridge exists to interrupt that cycle.

We provide a structured, full-day STEAM-based program that intentionally builds:

  • Academic skill (with embedded math, literacy, and technology integration)
  • Confidence and identity as capable learners
  • Career and college exposure
  • Social-emotional growth and community belonging
